Pathways to World Class Teaching:
Supporting National Board Certification

CFT and its members have played an active role in strengthening the teaching profession through the National Board for Teaching Standards initiatives. Both the NBPTS and CFT responded to the call for teacher quality clearly articulated by the Carneige Commission reports, A Nation At Risk and A Nation Prepared for the 21st Century. While the NBPTS formed and began the process of developing high and rigorous standards and performance assessments, CFT responded by developing the Career in Teaching Program. The NBPTS and the CFT Career in Teaching Program share a common vision, are grounded in standards and performance based, and assessed by teachers. It not only blazed a trail for other federations to follow, it initiated and nurtured authentic teacher leadership in our district. In many ways the Career in Teaching Program and other CFT initiated professional roles provided the professional culture enabling many CFT members to become Board Certified.
