Teacher certification/licensing in Ohio is redesigned with state standards to establish responsibility for continuing education of educators within each school district. The licensing standards state:
Every school district shall appoint a local professional development committee (LPDC) to oversee and review professional development plans for course work, continuing education units or other equivalent activities. The local professional development committee shall be comprised of teachers and administrators with the majority of the members being practicing classroom teachers.
Each educator fulfilling the license renewal requirements is responsible for the design of an individual professional development plan (IPDP), subject to approval by the LPDC. The plan shall be based on the needs of the educator, the students, the school and the school district.
Each school district shall establish a local appeal process for educators who wish to appeal the decision of the local professional development committee.
Course work for continuing education units or other equivalent activities may be combined in the individual professional development plan.
The Teacher Education and Licensure Standards became effective January 1, 1999. License renewal after that date requires the recommendation of the district’s LPDC. Individual professional development plans must be written, approved and completed before educators can renew or convert their licenses. This document details the responsibility of the LPDC, the educator and the procedure for obtaining an Ohio license, and the IPDP forms.
